The Power of Vulnerability and Self-Discovery to Reconnect with the Abandoned Parts of Ourselves!
As we journey to become everything we expect of ourselves, and what others expect of us, the wisdom of our own voice gets lost. What were once clear and wise messages from our spirit have been silenced by the crowds of sounds, opinions, suggestions, judgements and demands that continuously filter in and out of our spirit. Now it's difficult to hear and trust our divine connection to self. Vulnerability and self-discovery can teach us how to hear our own whispering voice again, and to trust what she speaks.
Am I the only one who has abandoned pieces of herself along life's journey of compromises, efforts to belong, unresolved conflicts, fears, losses, quests for love and other puzzles of our human existence? I believe most of us share this common feeling:
"Something of me has been left behind. How do I hear her calling and how do I find her?"
Today, I am writing this post drained and sore after a six mile run in the muggy heat and rain of a Louisiana spring morning. The woman who had the grit and courage to make that run had been abandoned by me long ago. I had shut her voice down in favor of those who judged me for being a free spirit and not fitting the mold expected of me. "You should stay in one place, you're not the standard of American beauty, you're too strong, you need to change," the choir of the fearful serenaded me. I listened and sadly joined my voice with theirs. In so doing, I abandoned vital and divine pieces of myself.
The impetus of my self-discovery journey was my desperation to trust my own voice again and to retrieve all pieces of myself from every corner I have abandoned her.

And so today, I have retrieved that courageous part of me who is a strong and powerful athlete-- it's good to have her home. Although the treasure hunt for all of me is far from over, I can hear the calling and I can hear the crisp messages from my own divine connection to self that speak words of empowerment, enlightenment, love and strength. The choir of the fearful is muted and I have called my voice back to self.
These 3 vulnerability and self-discovery activities are at the core of my journey to trust my own voice again and to reconnect with all parts of myself:
- Self- Reflection: Making a true and vulnerable assessment of the current state of your life. You need a full understanding of the vital pieces of yourself that have splintered away and of how silent your inner divine voice has become. What behaviors are you involved with that bother you? What is your attitude towards your life? Do you have any joy? How is joy expressed in your life? Do you want to continue on your current path?
- Self-Connection: Acknowledging your future potential, connecting to a vision and identifying the divine parts of you with which you want to reconnect. What do you want your future to be? What is your vision for your future? Will your current truth lead you to the future vision you desire? What abandoned parts of yourself will you need to retrieve in order to make your vision a reality?
From the vulnerable place of self-reflection, the truth of my current reality was not in alignment with the future vision to which I had connected. It took some work to even hear the divine voice of my spirit trying to guide me. The more I worked on self-reflection and self-connection the more clearly I could envision a future that inspired me and I began to trust my own whispering voice that reminded me that I had abandoned my creative feminine who loved to write and dreamed of becoming an author. What inspirational vision for your future can you self-connect to?
- Self-Correction: Taking action, with your own divine voice as your guide, to change course and pivot towards your future vision. Trust her voice. This might be unhealthy behaviors that you need to interrupt or perhaps you have fallen victim to non-stop negative thinking, isolation or self-sabotage that blocks your path to an inspirational future vision. What actions or behavior are stopping you from your vision? What can you start doing that will help you? What do your abandoned divine pieces need you to do to find them?
I was motivated to make many self-corrections necessary to pivot towards the life vision to which I had connected. My self-corrections ranged from stopping unhealthy habits to changing thought patterns and sabotaging behaviors. The more I self-corrected, the clearer my future life vision became.
It's imperative to spend time connecting to a life vision that is inspirational. It will be that inspiration that will keep you moving in the direction of your vision!
These self-discovery exercises are key items to reflect upon or journal about for clarity. With each new layer of understanding, I trusted my own voice and encouraged her to speak and sing more loudly!
Self-discovery work requires quiet time for self-reflection, self-connection and a plan for self-correction. In these times, a quiet laugh and a soft tune sung from my spirit will suffice while I do the work for my authentic joyful tune to emerge again.
