3 Ways to Heal Our Scars Through Vulnerability and Self-Discovery

What Scars and Invulnerability Have In Common and How Self-Discovery and Vulnerability Encourage the Healing Process

I know a little something about scars. I have studied my own physical and emotional evidence of wounds and the scars the injuries have left behind. I am grateful for the healing that has taken place in my spirit through my own self-discovery and vulnerability work. I observe the linkages between invulnerability and scars and use the lessons learned to elevate my own healing and increase my capacity to be vulnerable. I write and share my lessons in the hope that I am helping others to be freer in spirit as we learn, together, how to become more vulnerable.

Scars form as protection in the areas where the body has been wounded. They are considered a natural occurrence in the body's wound healing process, yet most people do not enjoy the look of physical scarring on their body. The robust business of scar removal and scar remedies is evidence of this fact.

And so it is with becoming invulnerable. Avoiding vulnerability is protection in the areas where we have been emotionally injured. Invulnerability is an emotional scar that forms after emotional injury just as physical scars forms after physical injury. The issue with avoiding vulnerability after emotional injury is that this protection can only result in healing if we allow vulnerability back into our lives. In other words, once an emotional injury occurs, being aware of our willingness, or unwillingness, to be vulnerable again can be a wonderful tool for the healing of the emotional injury. Sadly, what happens, instead, is that the state of invulnerability persists, and the fear of being emotionally injured again blocks the healing process. The longer we allow this emotional scar tissue to go untreated, the more hardened, stiff and painful it becomes.

As I become more in tune with my emotional scarring, my work...Read More

3 Tools for Greater Self-Discovery and Teaching Others from Your Own Life Lessons

So many of us were raised to believe that to put our best foot forward is to camouflage and mask everything about ourselves that would give others the opportunity to judge us or examine the intricacies of our life. In my opinion, this is a sure fire path to personal bondage and fear. I have found the greatest freedom of my lifetime in the teaching and empowering of women using my personal journey as our curriculum. While examining your own life and using what you find to empower others might not be an overnight journey, it is one that can lead to a greater level of personal freedom, an increased capacity to be vulnerable, and feminine power!

There are many wonderful self-discoveries that come from using your own journey to empower others -- one of the greatest is the awareness that your are the subject matter expert of your own existence. We can study our own lives in the same way that we study any other subject of significance. Our lives are significant and well worth the research and the effort to understand and self-discover. We have spent years studying other people, history, arts, politics and science but many of us have spent very little time studying and understanding the cries of our own soul as we move robotically from day to day in a frenzy to produce something that will make us feel significant and worthy.

The things of your uniqueness are study worthy. Your gifts and talents, as well as the challenges you have faced and overcome, are what make you a fascinating wonder! Even in the midst of your conflicts and challenges, taking the time and the interest in yourself to study and document what is evolving inside of you can become powerful lessons that will move you and others to personal empowerment if you have the courage to teach from your own life story.

Self-empowerment comes when you believe your story is worthy of being told. And it is! When you teach, motivate and empower others with lessons from your own journey no...Read More

The Power of Vulnerability and Self-Discovery to Reconnect with the Abandoned Parts of Ourselves!

As we journey to become everything we expect of ourselves, and what others expect of us, the wisdom of our own voice gets lost. What were once clear and wise messages from our spirit have been silenced by the crowds of sounds, opinions, suggestions, judgements and demands that continuously filter in and out of our spirit. Now it's difficult to hear and trust our divine connection to self. Vulnerability and self-discovery can teach us how to hear our own whispering voice again, and to trust what she speaks.

Am I the only one who has abandoned pieces of herself along life's journey of compromises, efforts to belong, unresolved conflicts, fears, losses, quests for love and other puzzles of our human existence? I believe most of us share this common feeling:

"Something of me has been left behind. How do I hear her calling and how do I find her?"

Today, I am writing this post drained and sore after a six mile run in the muggy heat and rain of a Louisiana spring morning. The woman who had the grit and courage to make that run had been abandoned by me long ago. I had shut her voice down in favor of those who judged me for being a free spirit and not fitting the mold expected of me. "You should stay in one place, you're not the standard of American beauty, you're too strong, you need to change," the choir of the fearful serenaded me. I listened and sadly joined my voice with theirs. In so doing, I abandoned vital and divine pieces of myself.

And so today, I have retrieved that courageous part of me who is a strong and powerful athlete-- it's good to have her home. Although the treasure hunt for all of me is far from over, I can hear the calling and I can hear the crisp messages from my own divine connection to self that speak words of empowerment,...Read More

Before you embark on your own self-discovery and vulnerability journey read about what helps make my journey so fulfilling!

1. The Ability to Laugh at Myself

Many years ago as a busy young mother, wife and real estate agent, my broker told me something that I have taken with me throughout all my work in real estate, self-discovery activities, conflict resolution work and mediation skills consulting.

I remember sitting at my desk in the small family-owned real estate business feeling very down on myself for some new agent mistake. While I sat there berating myself out loud, my broker came over and said:

"Jada, in order to make it in this business, you've got to be able to laugh at yourself."

Wow! How right he was. Even when difficult, I make an effort to laugh at the imperfections of my being. It makes a world of difference in how I relate to myself and to my clients as I encourage them to resolve conflicts in their lives and continue to have new awarenesses that help them at work and in their relationships.

2. Belief

When I began to emerge from the fog of a life of forcing and pushing and trying to control all aspects of my environment, the most transformative of all of my realizations was that I did not have to remain the same. Becoming better, flowing with life and using feminine power instead of force was all within my reach if I only had the courage to believe that I could discover, blossom and transform.

(Learn more about my journey in my book,...Read More

Here's What Happened When I Made the Decision to Examine My Own Heart

Yesterday, I woke up with a very strange thought on my mind, "I don't really want to lose anybody." Honestly, I was almost panicked. When I stopped and just examined that thought and felt the accompanying emotions, I realized what it meant. My heart has been closed to real, deep and fulfilling love, and true vulnerability in relationship with someone, out of the anxiety of loss. That may not be a new self-discovery for some but for me it was a deep examination of my current reality and a testament to the work I have been doing to embrace and expand my own vulnerability capacity.

In our society, we spend so much time talking about the fear of rejection that sometimes the fear of loss and our inability to imagine dealing with loss has gotten missed in our discourse.

In the examination of my own heart, I can now see that this is an area I need to pay special attention to. I am aware of this heart matter now and I choose to do what is necessary to make sure that this condition is healed. When we closed our hearts because of self-protection and maybe even survival, perhaps we didn't realize that the same heart that we closed to loss and hurt is the same heart that we closed to love. It is the same heart.

A dictionary search of the word half-hearted describes this state as lacking energy and enthusiasm. In my mind, and in the context of vulnerability and love, I desire to expand that definition. My definition of half-hearted is lacking the capacity to bring one's full expression of love, vulnerability, forgiveness, or talent to the relationship or goal. We may really want to express ourselves whole-heartedly and swing open wide our front door to welcome friends and love, but the fear of loss prevents us from going all in for something we say that we truly want. So what perhaps appears as disinterest or lack of enthusiasm and energy might just be that fearful, half-hearted and protective...Read More

When I begin work with a conflict resolution or vulnerability capacity coaching client, I listen very actively in order to understand what stage of self-discovery the client might be in.

I never assume that a client in conflict is not open to self-discovery. In fact, most are open once we work through the self-defense mechanisms, and other roadblocks, that have been triggered by the conflict and by the anticipation of the conflict resolution or coaching intervention itself.

I was introduced to the concept of naming self- defense mechanisms during a management coaching training program. After completing the exercise, in which I did the basic work of naming my self- defense mechanisms, I just couldn’t leave it there. The basic exercise resonated so deeply within me that I needed to explore it further—that...Read More
